Great Writers: "The Handmaid's Tale," Margaret Atwood

In a coup, the United States government is overthrown by rebels who disenfranchized women.  The new country, The Republic of Gilead, The central character, Offred, is a Handmaid, a marital surrogate, whose duty is to bear children for the upper class Commanders and Wives.  Old Tstiment sentiment, a militarized Upper Class, and a servant older and lower class make the rules which govern an essential slave lower class.Serena Joy, the Commander's wife, is a former televangelist, who controls illegal trists with Offred and her husband, the Commander, who learns to prefer Offred to his wife.  Offred is generally unhappy with the circumstances and essence of her life and explains in her own words, what's she's thinking and feeling under this weight.

Atwood ascends to popular writer, comparable to George Orwell and Aldous Huxly, dystopic writers who predate this woman's memoir.  Describing a scene resembling Harvard University, Atwood offers a very negative version of what might happen to the country, after losing the rebellion to the new fascist government.
