Great Writers: Cormac McCarthy, Blood Meridian

Caution with this one, teachers.  Thee will be a huge objection to Blood Meridian.  I guarantee it. Although McCarthy was a hot, hot, hot author, he was not beyond approach when it comes to this subject:  Violence.  This novel is filled with violent, almost disgusting scenes--and it is very hard to ignore any of them.  Read the first two articles, My Notes and "Heir to Melville and Faulkner: On Violence, the Sublime, and Blood Meridian's Place in the American Canon by Harold Bloom BEFORE you begin planning to teach Blood Meridian, and get permission from both the parents and the administration, in writing, before you teach it.
