THE ILIAD: epic poem about the Trojan War.  Man v. Man, Man v. Gods. Man v. Himself, Man v. Nature. Starting with the abduction of Helen, won as a prize between he major goddesses about Who is the most beautiful of the three, Trojan Prince, Paris, judged the contest.  without knowing the consequences, he won Hellen from Menelaus, the king of Sparta.  After she was stolen, Menelaus drafted his brother Agamemnon to gather an army of Greek leaders and warriors to sail to troy and regain the princess and the prestige.  All caused by the gods, there withe hundreds of thousand men killed during the conflict.  Innocent Trojans were pulled into battle.  The gods then, chose sides and upped the slaughter total.  Achilles was the best Greek fighter; Hector the best Trojan.  This is all their story. Originally spoken over a week's entertainment, Homer wrote it down about 500 BC.
