After Julius Caesar was assassinated in the Senate in 44 B.C., His adopted Son, Octavian, challenges Antony and when Octavian wins, he declares himself Emperor and changes his name to Augustus.  He rules from 27 BC until his death in 14 B.C.  Vergil became the supreme poet during this period.

The Aeneid was a written epic poem (the Iliad and the Odyssey were spoken). Born an Italian he obtained citizenship from Augustus by connecting the Caesars to the origin of Rome through the Epic.  the first six books of the Aeneid reflect the adventures of Odysseus, and the last 6 books are filled with fighting the Italians to gain control of Italy.  Of course, the gods control a lot of the action and the protagonists almost always do their bidding.

All in all, the Aeneid is top quality.  Vergil will appear as a guide of the underworld in Dante's Inferno.  He is referenced frequently in Western Literature canon.
